Destiny 2changed in a big way on Watch Revenge Ride OnlineOct. 1, starting with the game's long-discussed move to Steam.
The particulars boil down to business moves: Bungie, the studio behind the Destiny games, regained full control over the series after parting ways with publisher Activision earlier in 2019. That left Destiny 2, which was only available to PC players through the Activision Blizzard-owned video game launcher Battle.net, without a home.
Enter Steam, the popular online gaming store and community platform. Destiny 2moved there on Oct. 1, the same day a big chunk of the game went free-to-play. And thanks to Steam's less stringent policies around the display names people can use in their online games, players have noticed a distinct change in the lineups of online lobbies.
One enterprising fan took advantage of "what Steam has wrought" and created the @destiny2names.exe Twitter feed. Now, whenever a player spots some excessively weird display name, they can just share it with Destiny2Names and maybe score a re-tweet for the delight of the account's 4,300-plus followers and counting.
No, it's not some huge, viral thing. But I play a lot of Destiny 2and I'm obsessed with the creativity displayed by people exploiting Steam's lax display name policies. I also appreciate the Twitter account creator's stance toward what is and isn't OK to submit.

Preach on, mysterious stranger. You can change your display name easily if you're feeling creative. Just head to your profile page in the Steam client, click the "Edit Profile" button, and write whatever you want your display name to be in the "Profile Name" text field, near the top of the page. Simple.
I've got a lot of favorites from what's been shared so far. Like this one (blue text), that riffs on an error messages Destiny 2players see whenever new content launches and the network of machines that keep the game running start to feel the strain.

This one just makes me and my terrible PvP skills feel seen. Or maybe called out?

One of the earliest taglines that floated around for the original Destinywas "Become legend."
These two jokers took that in an unusual direction. They're probably playing together on the same fireteam, but I want to live in a world where Windows 98 and Windows Vista just meet up by accident in a Destiny 2patrol zone.

You've got to squint to see this one, but even bad takes can be display names in Destiny 2!

There's plenty of juvenile stuff to be found in that feed as well, but that's bound to happen when an all-ages audience is allowed to call themselves whatever they want on a mostly anonymous platform. As 2019 has taught us again and again, lots and lots (and lots) of people are, in fact....
