You might associate Dante Basco with the phrase "Bangarang!" or The Erotic Adventures of Zorrowith a scarlet mohawk or just as a familiar voice. The 41-year-old actor is best known for playing Rufio alongside Robin Williams' Peter Pan in Hook, and with a little help from Kickstarter he could very well get his own origin story.
SEE ALSO: From 'Sister Act' to 'Hook,' Carrie Fisher helped improve a bunch of moviesBangarang, a short film by Jonah Feingold and Jeremy Dylan, follows the journey of young Roofus as he becomes Rufio. The filmmakers emphasize that this is not your average sequel/prequel/reboot, but a coming-of-age story about the type of hero who often gets pushed aside.
"This movie is a social commentary on the current world climate," the Kickstarter home page reads. "We are taking a beloved character out of his comfort zone."
Roofus is a 13-year-old kid who is destined to be more than he is. After his mother is forced to put him into a foster home, he and his rag-tag group of best friends -- a Jamaican boy named Julani and a bright-eyed latina force of nature named Ella - find a way for Roofus to escape his ill fate, find his happy thought and fulfill his destiny.
Now more than halfway there, the short will be fully funded at $30,000 -- and if they hit $200,000, they'll make it a feature-length movie. The campaign runs through March 14.
