Famous pieces of artwork are Series Archivesfun to look at, but it turns out they're even more fun to animate.
Kajetan Obarski (a.k.a. Kiszkiloszki) is an Amsterdam-based animator who specialises in turning artistic masterpieces into spectacularly surreal short animations.

As you can see, the results are glorious:

He currently works full-time as a freelance animator, and in his spare time he makes the short animations he's become known for on social media.
"I create animations almost everyday," said Obarski. "If not for the clients, then for my own pleasure (to promote my stuff at the same time). I have millions of ideas waiting for their time to become animations and life is short.
"So, It’s even more than a full-time job. It’s a life-time job."
Via GiphyVia GiphyMany of Obarski's short animations are adaptations of well-known paintings from the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Francisco Goya, and Jean-François Millet. When asked where he gets his ideas from, though, Obarski isn't sure.
"From my sketchbook and my notebooks," he replied. "I really don’t know. Where do you get yours? I think there’s no answer to this question."
Often, Obarski will find a particular painting or scenario he likes and turn it into a series.
This painting, for example, is the original "Potato Planters" by Jean-François Millet.
And here are five animations Obarski created using Millet's painting as a starting point (each more brilliantly surreal than the last):

"I always feel that I can do something better so there are no favourites," he said. "The one that I lately enjoy the most is the Death Fairly Tales project. This is actually a series of super short stories about the skeleton fairy and her skeleton helper doing some magic stuff to human beings.
"I'm freaking loving it."
