Greta Thunberg had a stark warning for world leaders as she delivered remarks while speaking on Watch The Lion King Onlinea panel of young environmentalists at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Sitting on a panel about youth activism on Tuesday, the 17-year-old climate activist urged politicians and the media to listen to scientists' warnings about global heating, warning that we're rapidly running out of time to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

Thunberg cited the 2018 SR15 IPCC report which concluded that limiting Earth's warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius would need "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society."

"I want to take this opportunity to once again remind everyone of our current situation," she said.

"In chapter two on page 108 in the SR15 IPCC report that came out in 2018, it says that if we are to have a 67 percent chance of limiting the global average temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, we had on Jan. 1 2018, we had about 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit in that budget.

"That number is much lower today as we emit about 42 gigatons of CO2 every year," she added, warning that the carbon budget could be gone in less than eight years.

"These numbers aren't anyone's opinions or political views, this is the current best available science," Thunberg said. "Though many scientists suggest these figures are too moderate, these are the ones accepted through the IPCC."

Thunberg delivered her statements on the panel which also featured Salvador Gómez-Colón, Natasha Mwansa, Edward Felsenthal, and Autumn Peltier speaking about youth activism in the face of climate change.

Thunberg declared that rich countries needed to reduce carbon emissions rapidly and then assist poor countries in making the necessary changes. Earlier in the speech, she also said that not enough progress had been made in combatting the climate crisis.

"It depends on how you see it of course, in one aspect, lots has happened that no one could have predicted, that this has sparked a general awareness and the movement of course," she said.

"If you see it from another perspective, pretty much nothing has been done since the global emissions of CO2 have not reduced and that is what we are trying to achieve among other things."

Thunberg also said that she cannot complain about not being heard, but that science and the voices of young people needed to be at the centre of the conversation.

"It's about us and our future, future generations, and those who are already being affected today," she said.

Thunberg will deliver her own speech at the World Economic Forum later on Tuesday.
